  3. Who podcasts?
  4. How do I get podcasts?
  5. What is a "podcatcher"?
  6. What does it cost to download or listen to a podcast?

•  What is a podcast?

Average Joe Answer:

The term comes from combining "iPod" and "broadcast". An easy way to understand it is "audio on demand". You listen when it's convenient for you. Early bird or night owl, podcasting can fit your schedule!

Techie Answer:

Audio content delivered via RSS .

•  Do I need an iPod?

No! You can listen to podcasts on your computer using Windows Media Player (Windows) or Real Player (Mac). If you recently purchased an MP3 player for use with our downloadable audio book program, you most likely are ready to go using Windows Media Player.

You also can download podcasts to any brand of MP3 player and listen on the go, in the car, while you work out, on the bus, wherever! If you prefer, you can download the podcasts and burn them to CD for use in your car stereo, home stereo or portable CD player.

•  Who podcasts?

Podcast programming is growing by leaps and bounds! Music, travel, politics, lectures - you name it- and you are likely to find something on the web. Some podcasts are better than you can imagine and some are dreadful. You have to be willing to experiment and discover what meets your taste and production value expectations.

Several websites offer directories of podcasts. Here are some:

  Podcast 411

  Podcast Alley

  Yahoo! Podcasts

  LearnOutLoud.com

  iTunes Store

  PodcastPickle

  Podcast Bunker

•  How do I get podcasts?

You could visit the websites directly that offer them and download them to your computer, but the easiest way is to use a "podcatcher". [See next entry]

•  What is a "podcatcher"?

A podcatcher is software that allows you to subscribe to your favorite podcasts using their RSS feeds. When new content or episodes are available, your podcatcher will automatically download them for you, and then you're ready to listen to them on your computer, burn them to CD, or transfer them to your MP3 player.

Popular podcatchers include:

Juice(formerly iPodder) for Windows, Mac or Linux

     Odeo

     FeedDemon for Windows

     Yahoo! Podcasts

     iTunes

•  What does it cost to download or listen to a podcast?

Nothing. It's free! Some video podcasts require a fee, depending on the producer (for example, recent episodes of popular television programs).

Enhance your summer travel plans with podcasts

So.you're going on vacation. Your iPod or favorite MP3 player is loaded with new music and a favorite audio book you've downloaded from our website. Done? Almost but not quite! We've got some great travel podcasts for you to consider before you leave.

What's a podcast? Fair question. Podcasts are audio recordings posted on-line that you can download to an iPod and MP3 players for free. All you need is a computer with Internet access and your player. Check our information on this site "Getting started with podcasting" for a more complete explanation.

Listed below is a small selection of travel-oriented podcasts we have sampled and can recommend to you. A great place to search for travel podcasts is www.digitalpodcast.com . Go to digitalpodcast and select travel. Place your destination in the search box and chances are you'll find a podcast. Our list is comprised of "amateur", independently produced shows nestled along side polished, professionally produced radio shows. Amateur as we've used the term means the program is produced, most likely on a shoe-string budget by a travel enthusiast without corporate-backing or by someone who simply seeks an outlet to share his or her knowledge or love for a particular place.

earbudsNone of the podcasts can replace a good travel guide but you'll discover they add value and enjoyment to your travel experience. Now, before you close your carry-on, download a few of these and make sure you stick'em in your ears. You'll thank us (we hope).

Amateur Traveler is for people who love to travel--all over the place. It focuses on travel stories with a dash of travel news, travel tips and travel resources. Season with humor and serve weekly. Production qualities are a bit uneven but the content is diverse and rewarding.

Trends Taste and Travel Captain Cy Emerus is your Host for Trends, Taste and Travel. Captain Cy is an airline captain who has spent the last 35 years taking travelers to exotic destinations the world over. Captain Cy is enthusiastic and likable but commercials can interfere with the flow and depth of interviews. They pay the bills for the radio show and we probably shouldn't carp.

MosaicSF does San Francisco . Every week MosaicSF takes a very close look at the colorful, and not so colorful, characters and stories that make up the mosaic that is San Francisco . Very humorous. Check out the episode about the Mission and the local firemen taste-testing burritos.

Sparkletack supplies bite-sized chunks of history and culture from my favorite city, San Francisco, from the wild days of the Barbary Coast to the particularities of modern life--weekly observations and stories from America's left coast. This is absolutely the best podcast on SF and one of the best podcasts on the Web. The Sparkletack host and producer creates these episodes as a labor of love and it shows. Boston needs its version of Sparkletack. Someone step up please!
