    April 4, 2023, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
    @
    Whiton Room

The 1849 murder of Dr. George Parkman in Boston stands as one of the most - if not the most - sensational trials of the 19th century. This case has it all: a grisly murder, a dismembered corpse, a wealthy victim, a respected suspect, a questionable lead witness for the prosecution and unusual court proceedings.

Nearly 60,000 spectators were ushered through the Boston courtroom in 10-minute intervals. An all-out media blitz ensued, with journalists traveling from Europe to Boston to cover the trial. Ultimately, the case spawned books, documentaries and even an iPhone app.

Join Judge Curran to examine the lawyers, the judges, the problems with the case and its many oddities.

We will explore how permaculture integrates disciplines such as ecology, agriculture, and design, and how it emphasizes the importance of observation, diversity, and cooperation in creating resilient systems.

Attendees will leave this session with a foundational understanding of what permaculture is and how it can be applied to one’s own property.

  39. Henry Quinlan presents: The Ukraine War and Vladimir Putin

    April 20, 2023, 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM
    @
    Whiton Room

This presentation starts with the causes of the war and examines the intended and unintended impacts of the war on Ukraine, Russia, and the rest of the world. Some of the notable impacts besides the death and destruction in Ukraine are the possibilities of millions of people slipping into poverty, a worldwide food shortage, and a worldwide recession. Both governments lack transparency, preventing the true consequences of the war being known. The role of the United States is questioned – is it fighting a third-party war? There are significant financial impacts far beyond Russia and Ukraine, and the best outcome is a negotiated peace. But these questions remain: Can the War be a distraction of a new world order being created? Is there a new “Ice Curtain” being erected by Russia? Is there a future for Ukraine? Will Russia remain on track to being the world’s leading food producer because of global warming? Is there a risk of Nuclear War? What's the role of China?

  46. A.I. in our Lives: An Overview of Artificial Intelligence and How it's Being Used Today

    April 26, 2023, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    @
    Whiton Room

From art, music, and writing, Artificial Intelligence or A.I. is going to completely change the way we interact with the world. While companies are in a digital arms race to be the first to bring this technology into our everyday lives, it leaves many of us questioning. How can a computer create art and what does that mean for their human creators? When A.I. like ChatGPT and Bard search the internet for you, where are they going to get those answers? Will they always be right?

Listen to technology librarian Robby St. John as she explains the basics of how A.I. technology is being used today, what are the pros and cons of such technology, and where it might be heading in this simplified overview.

  48. Wild About Harry Screening and A Golden Retriever & His Two Dads Signing

    @
    Whiton Room

Join producer James Eagan and author Dan Perdios for a film screening and book signing event!

Set in 1973 on Cape Cod and inspired by director Gwen Wynne’s childhood, Wild About Harry tells the story of the havoc that is wreaked in a teenage girl's life when she discovers her widowed father is gay. Alternately comic and tragic, the film captures the homophobia of the time set against a backdrop of small town America on Cape Cod.

A Golden Retriever & His Two Dads chronicles James and Dan’s experience making Wild About Harry. One morning at the local coffee shop a Golden Retriever named Willy introduces two guys who become his Dads. Together they take off to Cape Cod to make a film. The drama of the movie mirrors the story of their lives. Part travelogue, part romance, part Hollywood, this is a thoroughly entertaining dog adventure you won't want to miss.
