Evening With the Authors: Choices and the Power of Possibility

Tuesday, April 13, 2021

April is Autism Awareness Month, and we are pleased to host authors J.M. Crawford and Nicole Donovan to share their memoirs about raising sons who are diagnosed with autism. J.M. Crawford’s book, CHOICES, and Nicole's memoir, A LIFE SUSPENDED, offer intimate glimpses into motherhood, autism, and advocacy.

Registration for this program has closed. If you had previously registered, you have been emailed the Zoom information.

An accidental meeting at a Cape Cod bookstore brought the two women together- two mothers who raised sons spanning the autism spectrum. The instant connection brought them friendship and collaboration, sharing their personal and sometimes heart-wrenching stories about challenges, courage and resilience. They joined forces to raise awareness, educate, and inspire others. Their books are also meant to educate extended family members, educators and everyday people in the community. And most of all, to let parents like them know they’re not alone.

Nicole Hendrick Donovan is an author, reflective storyteller, and teacher who offers personal essays, memoir and workshops as a container for others to seek their inner wisdom and truth. Her memoir, A Life Suspended: A Mother and Son’s Story of Autism, Extinction Bursts, and Living a Resilient Life, brings the reader into the home and heart of a family in crisis. Donovan’s vulnerable storytelling cultivates compassion and understanding, opening a door where acceptance and empathy expand. Nicole is a contributing writer to The Mighty, Autism Parenting Magazine, Finding Cooper’s Voice and Herself360.

Johanne Crawford is a writer, autism advocate and mother of an adult son with severe autism. Through sharing her personal story, she hopes to raise awareness of this growing diagnosis and the need to bridge the gap between public education and adult services. Most of all, she hopes it inspires others to find fortitude and faith within themselves and know that their voice matters. She continues to work with special needs students in the public school system and live in her Habitat for Humanity Home on Cape Cod.
