Borrowing Policy

Loan Periods
Most materials, except for new or special materials, may be checked out for 14 days. Reference and historical materials do not circulate. There are no restrictions on the number of books that may be checked out at one time, although we may impose reasonable limits to ensure equitable access during peak demand periods for specific titles or subjects.

Renewals
Materials may be renewed a maximum of 2 times as long as no one else has requested them. Items may be renewed via phone or by logging into your library account online. Automatic renewal is also available for eligible items, you can opt in to this feature from your online library account or by asking library staff.

Reserves/Holds
To request a book or other item not on the shelf, patrons may place a "hold" on the item. The hold may be placed by searching the online library catalog for the desired item and clicking the Place Hold button. Staff can also place your hold. You will be notified when your hold is available. Requests for items you wish the Library to consider for purchase may be made by filling out a Purchase Request form online or at the Main Desk.

Returns
Borrowed items may be returned in any of the bookdrops located both inside and outside the Library.

Overdue, Lost or Damaged Materials

Charges for lost and damaged materials are based on the replacement cost. While there are no overdue fines or fees charged for items owned by the Hingham Public Library that are returned late, items that are overdue and not returned within 60 days of the due date will be considered lost and the replacement cost will be automatically charged to your account.

Please note that items owned and/or borrowed from other libraries may incur a late fee. Please check with the owning library to inquire about their overdue fine schedule.

Accumulated charges of $15.00 or greater will result in suspension of borrowing privileges at the Hingham Public Library and throughout the Old Colony Library Network. Borrowing privileges are restored once the outstanding balance is paid or is less than $15.00.
