    October 8, 2024, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
    @
    Whiton Room

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

For more information about this training, contact the Hingham Health Department at (781) 741-1466 or email: healthdirector@hingham-ma.gov. No registration is required.

  22. Evening With the Author presents: Howard Mansfield and "I Will Tell No War Stories"

    October 10, 2024, 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM
    @
    Whiton Room

When Howard Mansfield grew up, World War II was omnipresent and hidden. This was also true of his father’s time in the Air Force. Like most of his generation, it was a rule not to talk about what he’d experienced in war. “You’re not getting any war stories from me,” he’d say. Cleaning up the old family house the year before his father's death, Mansfield was surprised to find a short diary of the bombing missions he had flown. Some of the missions were harrowing. Mansfield began to fill in the details, and to be surprised again, this time by a history he thought he knew.

I Will Tell No War Stories is a powerful story about undoing the forgetting in a family and in a society that has hidden the horrors and cataclysm of war.

Inspired by a real-life experience of director Josh Margolin's own grandmother, Thelma puts a clever spin on movies like Mission: Impossible, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business despite what her daughter Gail, son-in-law Alan, or grandson Danny might believe.
