Old fashioned deli pickles can’t be beat. They are easy to make, full of flavor and health promoting probiotics. Ditch the heat and work of water bath canning. This is a monthly financial literacy program designed to educate women of any age about the financial matters that affect their lives. Evening with the Author: Doug Most presents "Launching Liberty: The Epic Race to Build the Ships That Took America to War"

In a town known as a shipbuilding capital, Doug Most, journalist and author from nearby Needham, will discuss his newest book: "Launching Liberty: The Epic Race to Build the Ships That took America to War,” the World War II story of the people who gave us America’s Liberty ships.

Doug Most is an award-winning journalist and author of three books whose career has spanned newspapers, magazines, and universities up and down the East Coast, from Rhode Island to Washington, D.C., to South Carolina to New Jersey to Boston. His 2014 nonfiction book, The Race Underground, tells the story about the birth of subways in America and was adapted into a PBS American Experience documentary. His latest book, Launching Liberty (August 2025, Simon & Schuster), tells the story of the building of America’s World War II Liberty ships. He works now as executive editor of the university daily newsroom and an assistant vice president at Boston University.

David Barrett presents: Churchill's Secret Armies of WWII - Part 1

David Barrett returns to the Hingham Library for this two-part series explaining how, with Churchill’s support, the British efforts at destroying the Nazi tyranny of World War Two, resulted in the victory of the Allies in 1945. In particular, he'll examine the formation of a very secret organization, the Special Operations Executive, SOE, and some examples of specific operations that took place in occupied Europe. These involved intelligence gathering and sabotage that gave support to the resistance in those occupied countries and led the way to total and complete victory.

Tech Chat for Beginners: What is the Internet?

This month we'll talk about the big concepts behind the Internet to help contextualize the things we use it for every day.

In this informal monthly chat, we start with a bite-sized lesson before opening it up for questions and conversation facilitated by a librarian. Learn alongside other beginners, ask questions, and share any tips and tricks you’ve picked up.

Gentle Flow and Stretch Yoga

This is a beginner to advanced beginner hatha yoga class which focuses on the larger muscle groups with slower, thoughtful and accessible movements, mostly on the ground, combined with gentle stretching. The class also includes breathwork and meditation to help center and calm the mind to facilitate the connection of the mind, breath, body, and spirit. All you need is an open mind, yoga mat, a towel or blanket (to roll for support as needed), and water.

The HPL Book Club is a friendly group of library patrons and bibliophiles which has been meeting regularly for over ten years. We average 15-20 members each meeting and are always happy to see new faces! Whether you're someone who wants to meet regularly or just pop in when a title piques your interest, you'll always be welcome in the HPL Book Club.

A.I. In Our Lives

From art, music, and writing, Artificial Intelligence or A.I. is already changing the way we interact with the world. While companies are in a digital arms race to bring this technology into our everyday lives, it leaves many of us questioning. How can a computer create art and what does that mean for their human creators? When A.I. like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's Co-Pilot search the internet for you, how are those answers generated? And, importantly, are they right? Join technology librarian Robby St. John as she explains the basics on how A.I. technology is being used today, what the pros and cons of such technology are, and where it might be heading in this simplified overview. They sound like bad guys, they look like bad guys . . . and they even smell like bad guys. But Mr. Wolf, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Snake, and Mr. Shark are about to change all of that...Mr. Wolf has a daring plan for the Bad Guys' first good mission. They are going to break two hundred dogs out of the Maximum Security City Dog Pound. Will Operation Dog Pound go smoothly? Will the Bad Guys become the Good Guys? Learn-to-Play Chess Club | Ages 6-10

Local high school students are offering a beginner’s learn-to-play chess club at the Hingham Library! The chess club will meet one Saturday per month and will teach the basics of chess. Players will learn the names of pieces and how they move, the rules of the game, and what they need to do to win. They will have an opportunity to play against the club leader(s) and other club members. This is a fun, interactive way to learn the basics of chess. Players do not need to bring any equipment.
