    In a town known as a shipbuilding capital, Doug Most, journalist and author from nearby Needham, will discuss his newest book: "Launching Liberty: The Epic Race to Build the Ships That took America to War,” the World War II story of the people who gave us America’s Liberty ships.

    Doug Most is an award-winning journalist and author of three books whose career has spanned newspapers, magazines, and universities up and down the East Coast, from Rhode Island to Washington, D.C., to South Carolina to New Jersey to Boston. His 2014 nonfiction book, The Race Underground, tells the story about the birth of subways in America and was adapted into a PBS American Experience documentary. His latest book, Launching Liberty (August 2025, Simon & Schuster), tells the story of the building of America’s World War II Liberty ships. He works now as executive editor of the university daily newsroom and an assistant vice president at Boston University.

    David Barrett returns to the Hingham Library for this two-part series explaining how, with Churchill’s support, the British efforts at destroying the Nazi tyranny of World War Two, resulted in the victory of the Allies in 1945. In particular, he'll examine the formation of a very secret organization, the Special Operations Executive, SOE, and some examples of specific operations that took place in occupied Europe. These involved intelligence gathering and sabotage that gave support to the resistance in those occupied countries and led the way to total and complete victory.

    Local high school students are offering a beginner’s learn-to-play chess club at the Hingham Library! The chess club will meet one Saturday per month and will teach the basics of chess. Players will learn the names of pieces and how they move, the rules of the game, and what they need to do to win. They will have an opportunity to play against the club leader(s) and other club members. This is a fun, interactive way to learn the basics of chess. Players do not need to bring any equipment.     Our Read to a Dog program provides a supportive environment to practice reading! Reading to trained therapy dogs helps develop literacy skills and builds confidence and self-esteem. Our canine friends are all wonderful, patient listeners who are looking forward to reading with you!

    Our listening teams are at the Library on Saturday mornings from 10:30 -11:30 in a quiet corner of the Children's Department.
